CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO PAPER MONSTER PRESS'S DREAM POP ISSUE

After setting the mood with the seductive flair of our "S/Trip-Hop Issue," we will now be leading you into a lovely afterglow with the "DREAM POP ISSUE."

Melodies taking you on an out-of-body experience; rhythms wrapping you up in a blanket of spacious soundscapes; and voices resonating like an echo-laden remix of your favorite bedtime lullaby. Dream Pop is the kind of music that keeps you awake yet under the sheets in a trancelike state at any hour of the day. It is atmospheric and ethereal ... And that is precisely what Paper Monster's fourth issue is all about.

It may seem like such an underground subgenre, but in fact, Wikipedia has its own looong alphabetical list of dream pop artists. If you can get an aural picture of Kevin Shield's (My Bloody Valentine) indulgence for delayed and distorted guitar effects with Elizabeth Fraser's (Cocteau Twins) or Hope Sandoval's (Mazzy Star) sleepy-eyed vocals; and Anthony Gonzalez's (M83) blurry and up-front synthesizer tones, then it's quite easy to catch our drift.

FREE SCRIPTWRITING WORKSHOP WITH JUN LANA

As his first batch of students graduate this May, award-winning writer and youngest Palanca Hall of Famer Jun Lana is again oferring a FREE writing mentorship program for aspiring screenwriters. Three applicants will be chosen to participate in an intensive 3-month, individualized mentorship aimed to refine their craft and expose them to career opportunities within the mainstream entertainment field.

The success of the first group lends a new dimension to what the upcoming class will experience – now writing for TV and soon for film, the first batch will actively take part as “buddies” who would help guide the next batch of mentees.

Interested applicants must submit their CV and a one-page essay (in Filipino) on why they want to pursue a career in screenwriting to junlana@rocketmail.com.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO PSF 7

Editors Alex and Kate Osias invite you to submit short fiction for consideration for the highly commended Philippine Speculative Fiction volume 7.

Philippine Speculative Fiction is a yearly anthology series, which collects a wide range of stories that define, explore, and sometimes blur the boundaries of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and all things in between. The anthology has been shortlisted for the Manila Critics’ Circle National Book Award, and multiple stories from each volume have been cited in roundups of the year’s best speculative fiction across the globe.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO KRITIKA KULTURA ISSUE  ON PHILIPPINE LITERATURE IN SPANISH

To the rare extent to which Philippine literature in Spanish is recognized to exist, the tradition is almost entirely identified with the life and oeuvre of José Rizal, the late-19th century author of the novels Noli me tangere and El filibusterismo and the poem “Mi último adiós.” The appearance of Filipino fiction and poetry in Spanish precedes Rizal, however, and creative publications in other genres as well thrived in diverse and continuous ways for many decades thereafter.

In the past century, a scattering of published surveys and graduate theses has sought to describe the key authors and texts of Philippine literature in Spanish, but virtually no sustained analytical scholarship on particular literary works, outside those by Rizal, has been produced. The object of this Forum Kritika is to encourage the creation of such a critical corpus and thereby initiate long-lasting investigations into the tradition, perhaps the most unknown in the Spanish-speaking world and among all Asian literatures in Western languages.

Through exercises, lectures and compositional assignments unheard of in poetry classes, we will sharpen your ability to detect the expressive nuances of sound in language. The end goal is for you to learn to hear in precise terms how you sound on the page.

Reading and listening list includes Shakespeare (and pop music version of one of his sonnets), Beethoven, Stephen Sondheim, club music, Jose Garcia Villa, Basho, Laura Mullen, Lyn Hejinian, Mei-mei Berssenbrugge, Sandra Miller, Ricardo de Ungria and Bjork.  We will also look at a Kandinsky.

Great food, interesting people, beautiful scenery-these are the things that propel you to share your travels with the world. Writing about your travels gives your reader a vivid picture of the places you've been to and the experiences you've had, and inspires them to take the journey to experience it themselves.

This May, the Filipinas Heritage Library invites budding travel writers to learn the basics of travel writing for various platforms and mediums while celebrating one of the Philippine's most colorful festivals-the Pahiyas Festival. Understand the difference between print and online writing, and gain insights from travel magazine publishers while taking inspiration from the gaily decorated houses in Lucban, Quezon.

FIRST MINDANAO WRITERS SUMMIT CONCLUDES IN CAGAYAN DE ORO

THE First Mindanao Writers Summit, a first in the country, was held on March 19 to 20, 2011 at the Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro City.

The brainchild of convener, Christine Godinez Ortega, vice head and coordinator for Central and Northern Mindanao of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (ncca)-Committee on Literary Arts, the Mindanao Writers Summit was organized with the help of Bathalad Mindanao, represented by Raul Moldez and Amelia Catarata Bojo; the Cagayan de Oro Writers Bloc represented by Zola Gonzalez Macarambon, and the summit host, Capitol University.

The summit gathered a total of 41 writers, who either head or are affiliated members of writers groups from Mindanao, and about 15 literature teachers as observers.

Organized without funding or sponsorships, the writers came on their own to, among other things, initiate a network of writers around Mindanao, to share writers problems and resources, and to implement an action plan for the next two years after brief lectures on the “Southern Consciousness” by Merlie Alunan; “How and Why Publish Works by Mindanao Writers Online” by Victor Sugbo; and, “the Significance of a Textbook For and By Mindanaoans” by Servando “Ben” Halili.
